All Photographs by Thomas Neumann, 1937
National Archives of Norway
I recently discovered Thomas Neumann, who was an electrical engineer and a photographer who used Agfa Neu film, the only brand of film I ever used until Agfa 50 disappeared. These images are 76 years old and were taken in Berlin before the second world war. I’ve also been researching lists on writing and rituals by writers like Joan Didion, Jack Kerouac, Henry Miller, John Steinbeck, Murray Kempton, R. M. Rilke, and Zadie Smith. I think they also apply to life in general or any art form.
If you are in La Jolla, the best place to visit is the Salk Institute for Biological Studies. My family lives in La Jolla part-time and this is one of my favorite places to visit and bring friends whenever I’m in town. La Jolla is a beach community located in San Diego about 2 hours or 180 km from Los Angeles. Architect Louis I. Kahn designed the facility that he envisioned in the 1960’s. The institute was developed for biologists to explore questions about the basic principles of life.
